Ringing Hills Chorus History

On August 12, 1991, sixteen women held their first meeting to plan the formation of a new chorus in the Pottstown area. It was their love of the hobby of singing Barbershop Harmony that led to the formation of Ringing Hills Chorus.

Norm Wilson, a seasoned barbershopper and former director of both a Men’s Chorus and a Sweet Adelines Chorus, was to be their director.

They needed a name and an insignia, so a contest was held. Our own Jan Dunning, one of the original 16, was the winner of both contests. She suggested the name Ringing Hills Chorus for two reasons. One, their rehearsal hall was located in the small and beautiful community known as Ringing Hills (which refers to rocks in the area that, when struck, ring different tones), and two, because the original plan was for the chorus to “ring” many chords during their history. Her design of hills and music notes is still part of our insignia.

By January of 1992, now with 32 charter members, the stage was set to send the application to Sweet Adelines International.

The Ringing Hills Chorus was officially chartered on May 1, 1992. Today 2 of those 32 charter members still sing with the chorus – Jan Dunning and Kathy Lehman. Pat Regan joined the chorus within the first year and also remains a member.

In 1993, Ginny Rooney became the second director and remained with the chorus until 1996. Arlene McMahon was the next director. Later in 1996, Debbie Sanders became the fourth director then left in 2009.

In 2012 we celebrated our 20th anniversary and were fortunate to have many former members celebrate with us.

In 2017 we celebrated our 25th anniversary.

We continue to rehearse weekly, perform around the area, compete each year, and produce an annual show.
